7 quick takes

1. Okay, first of all, what is with everyone getting their Friday posts done ahead of time? You're all making me look bad, what with my procrastinating tendencies and all. Maybe everyone lives on the East coast and has an earlier start than me. I bet that's it.

2. Aaaaaaand I just forgot number 2. Moving on.

3. Tonight we're heading to the first high school football game of the year. It should be interesting trying to corral Grace (pretty sure the game starts at her bedtime, so fun) while seeing something of the game. I'll also be trying to comfort my aunt as she watches her son play against some reportedly big guys. Fun times had by all? I think yes.

4. I just want to take a moment to share my love for Target's $1 bins. Seriously, why doesn't the dollar store have anything this good? I recently pulled out some flashcards (colors & shapes, complete with Sesame Street characters) and they're Grace's new favorite thing ever. She's not even good at them. She just loves playing with them and trying to make matches. And anything that provides my child with a good twenty minutes of entertainment is my favorite thing ever.

5. Question for the masses: How do you deal with a picky toddler? Her new thing at mealtimes is proclaiming, "I don't wike dat" to whatever I meticulously prepared and served her, after consideration and making sure she mostly had food she likes. She also is starting to ask for things (for instance, eggs for breakfast) and then waiting til they are served to push the plate away. Does anyone have answers? Tips? Insight? Toddler-friendly meals?

6. So about a week ago I finally started feeling like a normal (albeit slightly chubby) person. After a few months' break, coffee and I are joyfully reunited and it feels so sweet. I managed to get by on tea some of the time, but we all know that just didn't cut it. I'm pleased to say I'm a much happier person.

7. Here's a quick shout-out to my wonderful mother-in-law, who sent us (but mostly me, because I may not be sharing) some zucchini bread. This is especially appreciated after some disgusting bug ate through my zucchini plants from the inside out. It's just as well, considering the slow, painful death they would have endured by dehydration from my neglect. On a related note, if anyone has extra zucchini (or bread) they don't know what to do with, I can hook you up with my address.

Happy Friday, everyone! Have a good weekend! For lots more takes that promise to be more interesting, go see Jen.

  1. So glad you are feeling normal, and NO you look great, I saw in a few FB pics because I am creepy like that.

  2. I'm sure you look lovely, echoing Ana's comment! I really do think pregnant women look beautiful, but I know it's hard to feel that way when YOU are said preggo woman.

As for the food issue, I'm learning that good ol' discipline works best with Liam. I'm learning to say, "this is lunch/dinner/breakfast," and then giving him the option of staying up and eating what is on his plate or getting down. If he gets down, and he's hungry later: too bad. Being hungry, for just one meal, isn't the end of the world. I find that otherwise Liam just lives for his snacks, which are invariably, the less healthy options (goldfish and animal crackers v. fruit, cheese, meat: which one do I want him eating?)

  3. I think all the early birds to Quick Takes do them the day before and schedule them to post earrrrly Friday morning. I know that's the only way I ever get mine done before the following Wednesday.

  5. The target dollar bins are fantastic.

And you know, my kids both had picky phases. Luckily we are at an age with Gabriel where we make him sit and eat what is in front of him at dinner. Its a battle every night! Veronica I had to get more creative and blend in spinach into a kiwi and yogurt type of smoothie. It can be a challenge for sure!

  6. Have you tried getting a new plate or bowl for her to use? That sometimes works for us.

We have to bribe at pretty much every meal for Isaac. To make it less negative, we say things like "If you take a bite, mommy will make a funny face" or "If you take a bite of chicken, you can have more blueberries."

We also had a chart for him when we were really trying to get him to gain a few pounds. It had 1 meat 1 veggie 1 fruit 2 dairy and 3 grains for each day. We rarely filled the whole chart, but it was a good reminder for me of what he had that day and what he still needed.

Also...sorry, last thing...I just started reading The No-Cry Picky Eater Solution by Elizabeth Pantly. I'll let you know if it's any good ;) Good luck!
